More people today are
seeking natural ways to enhance their health and find relief from pain.
Massage and touch therapies have been used from the beginning of time. The
gentle touch of a hand can offer understanding beyond words.
Different thoughts come to mind when we
think of massage. Endless varieties of touch therapies are available,
making it hard to know where to start and what to look for.
Pain is the number one reason for doctor
visits. More than 300,000 British Columbians suffer from chronic pain.
Sixty per cent of requests asking for euthanasia are due to acute pain.
Over 30,000 tons of aspirin are manufactured in the United States each
year. These statistics and more are staggering. The resolution of pain is
an effort that concerns all of us.
In the early 1900s, a group of women
massage therapists decided that they would ask doctors to refer patients
to them. Since that time, massage has gained acceptance as a medical
modality useful in the treatment of pain.
Since 1969, the B.C. Government allowed massage to be
insured by B. C. Medical. Massage therapists graduated from accredited
colleges must pass board exams to become registered. When you go to an
R.M.T. you are assured that they have been trained to know what conditions
massage can help, and when massage is counter- indicated. If the massage
therapist feels you need medical advice they will refer you back to your
doctor. .

R.M.T.s may specialize in a variety of
techniques found effective for numerous conditions. Massage is a safe and
simple tool that assists the body in its’ natural healing processes by
improving the circulation. It can be used both preventively and
therapeutically. Your Doctor can refer you for massage therapy if he/she
feels your condition will be benefited by this. B.C. Medical only covers
doctor referred treatments. The public can choose from a large variety of
touch therapies being offered today. If you have a medical problem ask
your doctor about the use of therapeutic massage. R.M.T.s are listed
under massage therapy in the yellow pages.
Jocelyn W. Cowie R.M.T. graduated from
the West Coast College of Massage and Hydro Therapy in 1985. She was
elected to the Massage Therapy Association Board where she chairs the
massage research committee. She has been sharing her enthusiasm for this
healing art through continuing education programs for eight years. Selkirk
offers her courses here in Grand Forks.
Jocelyn moved to Grand Forks
in 1991 and is presently developing a full-
facility "European style" health spa.
Pain Management and Lifestyles Training will be a major focus of the spa.
